Utilization Isn’t the Villain

Utilization Isn’t the Villain

Utilization gets blamed for burnout...but it’s really about clarity.

In my third post on profitability, let's talk about utilization.

Utilization = Billable hours ÷ Available work hours

Example:
• Available hours: 40 per week
• Billable hours: 30
➡️ Utilization = 75%

Poor utilization usually means:

Work isn’t planned well
Time isn’t entered consistently
Capacity isn’t visible to leadership

Good utilization:

Protects teams
Improves forecasting
Drives better decisions

It’s a data problem, not a people problem.

Do you actually know your real capacity right now?

Clarity first. Always.
